Course Subject Designations
- FRST - An education abroad placeholder course. For more details, click here.
- INST - A consortium placeholder course, whereby the course number aligns with a specific consortium institution.
- TRNF - An elective originating via transfer, usually followed with course numbers between 0001 - 1103.
- UNCX - A placeholder course indicating a student is enrolled in a UNC Online course. The placeholder will include a course number that represents the credit hours at the visiting campus and is used for billing at UNC Charlotte (i.e., UNCX 1300 = 3 credit hours, UNCX 1400 = 4 credit hours). Upon completion of the UNC Online course, the equivalent course is applied as transfer credit. Effective spring 2020, the UNCX placeholder is non-graded.
- XNCR - A fictitious subject, always in conjunction with a course number of NCR, to indicate a transfer course has been reviewed and deemed non-transferrable for credit. (i.e., XNCR NCR = 0 credit hours)
Course Number Designations
- 1ELE - A 1000-level elective course specific to the department identified by the subject.
- 2ELE - A 2000-level elective course specific to the department identified by the subject.
- 3ELE - A 3000-level elective course specific to the department identified by the subject.
- 4ELE - A 4000-level elective course specific to the department identified by the subject.
- xxxxL - A course number ending in L indicates the course was a lab.
- xxxxC - A course number ending in C indicates courses taught in China.
- xxxxH - A course number ending in H indicates business courses taught in Hong Kong.
- xxxxM - A course number ending in M indicates business courses taught in Mexico.
- xxxxT - A course number ending in T indicates business courses taught in Taiwan.
- NCR - 3 character, fictitious course number, always in conjunction with an XNCR subject, to indicate a transfer course has been reviewed and deemed non-transferrable for credit. (i.e., XNCR NCR = 0 credit hours)
- x0xx - A course number with a 0 in the second position indicates a Special Topics course.
- x4xx - A course number with a 4 in the second position indicates an Internship or Practica course.
- x5xx - A course number with a 5 in the second position indicates a Cooperative Education Experience course. (i.e., 3500 - Undergraduate COOP Experience & 6500 Graduate COOP Experience)
- x6xx - A course number with a 6 in the second position indicates a Seminar course. (i.e., 3695 - Undergraduate COOP Seminar & 6695 Graduate COOP Seminar)
- x7xx - A course number with a 7 in the second position indicates an Honors course (the third & fourth digits are reserved for departmental or college use)
- x8xx - A course number with an 8 in the second position indicates an Independent Study course.
- x9xx - A course number with a 9 in the second position indicates a Research course.
Special Section Number Designations (always 3 characters)
- 300 - A section number of 300 indicates the course is credited by exam (excluding LBST courses).
- 9xx - A section number with a 1 as the first character indicates the course is taught on Saturdays.
- C80 - A section number of C80 indicates the course is part of the MBA program and meets in China.
- C91 - A section number of C91 indicates the course is a cooperative education (Co-Op) course.
- EA1 - Study abroad designation specific to the College of Business.
- Gxx - A section number starting with a G as the first character indicates it is a Globally Networked Learning (GNL) course. The second & third characters are numeric. (example: G01, G13, etc.)
- Hxx - A section number with an H as the first character indicates the course is honors level.
- LCx - A section number with an LC as the first two characters indicates the course is part of a learning community.
- Lxx - A section number with an L as the first character indicates the course is a lab.
- M80 - A section number of M80 indicates the course is part of the MBA program and meets in Mexico.
- Qxx - A section number with a Q as the first character indicates the course is part of the 'Prospect for Success' program (eff fall 2020).
- SAx - A section number starting with SA indicates a study abroad course. The third character is alpha-numeric. (example: SAB, SA1, etc.) This course was offered at a college/university abroad, but UNC Charlotte institutional credit was awarded.
- UOL - A section number of UOL indicates the course is offered through UNC Online (inter-institutional & 100% online).
- Uxx - A section number with a U as the first character indicates the course is taught at our Uptown Center City campus.
- x8x - A section number with an 8 as the second character indicates the course is a distance education course.
- x9x - A section number with a 9 as the second character indicates the course is taught in the evening.
Instructional Methods
HY - Hybrid: Face-to-Face & Online (thru fall 2020)- HYA - Hybrid: Face-to-Face & Asynchronous Online Component (beginning spring 2021)
- HYS - Hybrid: Face-to-Face & Synchronous Online Component (beginning spring 2021)

Student Status
- IS - Student has been out for a year or more OR is a first-term student not registered after drop/add ends; these students need to apply for readmission
- IP - Student has applied for graduation
- IG - Student has graduated
- IB - Student has been disciplinarily suspended
- ID - Student is deceased
- IO - "Inactive Other" - this is used for visitors, specials, escrow, summer-only readmits, consortium, and inter-institutional; students who are only admitted for a specific timeframe. If a future term exists with IS, the student will lose access to 49er express and email.
Grade Codes
- G* - Retains the hours and removes the quality points as part of the Associate Degree Rule
- R* - Hours and quality points removed as part of a forgiveness policy
- Q* - Grade replacement policy, effective fall 2007; hours and quality points removed
- Y* - Progression Exclusion; hours and quality points removed
Grade Modes
- A - Audit
- D - Dissertation/thesis (7999 & 9999 thesis and dissertation area graded with N so that the courses will not show as in progress on the transcript)
- H - Pass/No Credit (student-elected prior to the withdrawal deadline)
- K - Pass/No Credit (COVID-impacted; used for spring 2020 & 2020-2021 academic year)
- O - Co-Op (also 49er Ship/foreign language exemption)
- N - Non-Graded (for zero hour labs, ELTI courses, 7999 & 9999 thesis, and dissertation)
- P - Pass/No Credit (course is set up as pass/no credit)
- S - Standard letter grade
- U - Pass/Unsatisfactory (graduate-level use only)
Repeat Codes
- A - applies to undergraduate students only; hours are removed and quality points remain
- E - applies to graduate students; hours and quality points are removed
- I - Include - is applied to all repeated courses to note the repeat (Both courses have a code, A or E on the prior attempt and an I on the latest attempt. If the course can be repeated, an I is on both courses.)
